Partners Steven Shapiro and Marc Ullman have over 55 years of combined experience focused on labeling, regulatory and marketing issues in FDA regulated industry. The firm’s work involves dealing with regulatory compliance, crisis management, recalls and enforcement issues primarily relating to foods, dietary supplements and cosmetics marketed in the natural products industry. Both Steven Shapiro and Marc Ullman are frequent lecturers, writers, columnists and panelists on matters of interest to the legal profession and the supplements industry.

History

With roots dating back to the 1970s and the defense of consumers’ access to vitamins at the Proxmire Hearings as General Cousel to the National Nutritional Foods Assciation (predecessor to today’s Natural Products Association), attoneys of our predecssor firm Bass and Ullman we have been associated with a tireless advocy for consumer health freedom and opponents of ongoing FDA efforts to supress the natural products industry. In the 1980s our Founding Partner Robert Ullman and Steven Shapiro scored significant victories in the landmark Black Currant Oil and Evening Primorse Oil litigations effectivly shutting down the government’s efforts to severly limit that ability market dietary supplements through Food Additive Regulations with victories so overwhelming that FDA’s efforts charectorized by the courts as “Alica in Wonderland” and said to “defenestrate common sense”. In Robert and Marc Ullan successfully defended against the Federal Trade Commission’s attempt to block bone building claims for calcium dietary supplements. In 2008, Marc Ullman played a leading role in the development of the strategy that allowed the first legal importation of Stevia as a sweetener sincse FDA banned it as an “unsafe food addtive” in 1991.

Today our attorneys continue this tradition of advocay for the Natural Products industry and Consumer Health Freedom as active members of the American Herbal Produscts Association and the Natural Products Association as well as out clients rights to lawfully market a wide array of natural products including dietary supplements.
